The Sioux Falls Central Fire Station presents a brave front on Minnesota Avenue. There are a lot of nice views of the structure and I plan to go after them all.

The National Music Museum on the USD campus in Vermillion is an imposing structure, but softened by nearby trees, pleasant plaza entrance and afternoon shadows.

These two paintings are available now at Eastbank Gallery in the 8th & Railroad Center, Sioux Falls.

3rd Annual Harvey Dunn Plein Air Event is in the Books!

Euny and I stayed at a very nice B&B in town and had a great time at the paint out. The Harvey Dunn Memorial Society, Ingalls Wilder Homestead and SD Art Museum were gracious hosts, the weather was like Harvey Dunn clouds, and the turnout of artists was impressive. Pete Kilian and I gave watercolor and oil painting demonstrations, respectively. The wet paint show and sale at the Masonic Lodge went off without a hitch and enjoyed by all. Sales were brisk.

Special thanks to Jim and the Hardware Store in town. He set me up with a tie-down system to steady my easel in the wind. It worked great!

Silver City 3rd Annual Plein Air Event is in the Books...

I greatly enjoyed the Paint Out in Silver City this year. Check out the link for a report by Jan Sohl. I missed the first two events, but certainly will start planning to attend the next one. The weather was good- attendance was high and sales were brisk. The artist reception, chuck wagon dinner and ice cream social made us all feel at home. The artist trading card raffle and quick draw event worked out pretty good, too.

I appreciated the Artists Choice vote for my painting, "Community Church", and will spend the prize money on a new easel.

5x7 oil painting, "Community Church". Sold. A historic structure in town still in use.

12x9 oil painting, "Lake Pactola Landing". Sold. I painted with a few others at the boat landing on Pactola Lake early one morning.

12x9 oil painting, "Nugget Gulch Middle Falls". Available. I hitched a ride with Jan for the off-road drive (my Honda sedan wouldn't make it). Such a peaceful place.

12x9 oil painting, "Pactola Bush". Available. I could probably paint all day on one thing or another down by the lake. Easy access and comfort station nearby.

Artists had a great time painting in the Garden while Arborist Ben Chu, St. Louis, and Sioux Falls Master Gardeners worked on pruning trees.

I worked on a few paintings in between rain showers and the EastBank Art Gallery had a reception for us Saturday evening.

Ben attended the reception at EastBank and I gave him a small sketch I made of him pruning a tree.

Looking forward to sketching in Vermillion and Beresford tomorrow, Sheldon and Rock Rapids the day after, and painting out with the Master Gardeners and Ben Chu at the Japanese Gardens in Sioux Falls Thursday and Friday with a wet paint show and sale at Eastbank on Saturday. Studio En Plein Air

So, I have a couple shows coming up that I want to have paintings ready for. I 'dusted off' a couple ala prima paintings from last summer to frame, and then worked on a 'studio painting' using plein air sketches and photos for reference. These will go to the EastBank Gallery show in May.

I suppose the 'ala prima' paintings aren't that anymore, since I corrected a couple color and compositional errors. For the studio painting I took the opportunity to work a little bigger- 16x20- in case someone wanted to commission one that size in the future.

Roughlock Creek. Latchstring Inn, Spearfish Canyon 2010. Acrylic and oil on 9x12 panel. Fall colors and bush roots reaching to the water in early morning sunshine.

Pearson Ranch Cabin. Lead 2009. 8x10 oil on stretched canvas. I'd like to go back here and try this painting again- maybe as a vertical composition that leaves out the uphill trail into the trees.

I painted this 8x10 watercolor en plein air last week at the Dallas Arboretum on a family visit. They should host a plein air event there. The flowers and trees are wonderful.

Museum of Visual Materials PAAW Show

Prarie Artists Against the Wind are showing their work at the Sioux Falls Museum of Visuall Materials in March and April- 13 artists in all. I have these two paintings in the show- "The Big Sioux River Falls", oil, 14x18, a studio painting from a plein air sketch, and "Strawbale Winery", oil, 18x14, a plein air painting. The artists reception will be 6-8 pm, April 1. Hope to see you there!

Our trip to see kids and grandkids in LA was great fun and a third annual paint out in the front yard. I sketched a sunset sky above the busy street hedge in the front yard next to the church. On to Fort Worth!

Last weekend in Los Angeles Euny and I were pleased to meet Edd Hogan, sculptor, and Larissa Fasthorse, writer and choreographer. I compared my snow sculpting notes and pictures with Edd, and Larissa described a stage production that will open soon in Minneapolis. She also has roots in South Dakota. FUNSKI Snow Sculpting

The snow sculpting contest for a Children's Inn fund raiser at Great Bear, Sioux Falls, was a great way for artists to share their collective talents. I enjoyed every minute I was able to work on it. Prairie Artists Against the Wind and friends sculpted 'Wally' from two 4'x4'x6' blocks of snow. The judges gave us 3rd place and we received the People's Choice Award! I think we'll do it again next year. Check it out at Media One FUNSKI 2011.

I really enjoyed working with Praririe Artists Against the Wind and friends on the Media One snow sculpting contest fund raiser for Children's Inn at Great Bear Ski Valley this weekend. Our sculpture of 'Wally' the walrus got 3rd Place from the judges and the People's Choice Award. Kids had fun sliding down Wally's back and petting him. Thanks, Deb and David for organizing. Let's do it again next year!

...could be, I suppose. Anyway, great practice of painting technique with acrylics. Simple themes from the great outdoors- a cabin by the lake (from another painting by Don Demers) and a wagon by the schoolhouse from a photo at the Ingalls Homestead in De Smet last summer. Great fun.

We had a great time at the Spearfish Canyon Paint Out in the Black Hills last weekend. I'll post a few photos and paintings here. Stayed at Yesterday's Inn in Spearfish, a great bed and breakfast. Wonderful breakfasts there, and then the Bay Leaf Cafe and Romano's for dinners. The artists worked the canyon, had dinner at the Latchstring Inn and the Blue Dog Gallery hosted a wet sale on Sunday. Euny and I hiked the Iron Creek Trail to really appreciate the views and colors. Colors hadn't changed completely yet, but enough to enjoy. Blue Dog says their gallery is up for sale, but they will host next year's plein air event anyway. We will certainly attend.

We had a great time last weekend at the plein air event in De Smet. There were 20 plus artists from several states and we covered the Ingalls Homestead with fervor. The weather was perfect, the skies were definitely "Harvey Dunn', and our hosts were gracious and accomodating from start to finish. Sales at the wet paint sale on Sunday were brisk and much appreciated. I managed six paintings and sold two. A few photos from the weekend are posted here... and if you're ever in De Smet and need a place to stay, Euny and I would highly recommend the Prairie House Manor Bed and Breakfast - especially the breakfast.
